I need to respond to the constant claim by “catholic” groups seeking to change the Church by allowing Priests to marry and the ordination of women clergy. All these groups seem to think this will cure the sexual abuse problem once and for all. This argument makes little or no sense. The facts and number of abuse cases in protestant denominations, which allow married and women clergy, shows that this line of thinking is flawed. A report from AP on July 6, 2007 shows the number of abuse cases involving young people under the age of 18 is actually higher in protestant churches than in the Catholic Church within the United States. The AP obtained figures on sex-abuse claims from three companies that insure the majority of Protestant churches in America--Church Mutual Insurance Company, GuideOne Insurance and Brotherhood Mutual Insurance Company. This is a horrible problem that is in society as a whole. This does not excuse the Church for the abuse but we need perspective. No one is born with Roman Catholic stamped on their head. The doctrine and teachings of the Church are clear. To be truly Catholic we must be in communion with the Church and its teachings, this means we cannot support abortion, same sex marriage, married clergy or women priests. If these so called “catholic” groups are uncomfortable with this there are many denominations that fit their beliefs and will welcome them warmly to worship.
